Benin is a former French colony located in West Africa. The country has around 9 million inhabitants and covers an area of 112,620 km². The capital is called Porto-Novo. The country has a short coast line in the south on the Bight of Benin and borders Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Niger. From 1892 onwards the country was under French rule. In 1960 it gained independence. Until 1975, it was known under the name Dahomey.
