Marco Polo (1254-1324) was a Venetian merchant traveler from the Venetian Republic. He became famous for this travellers tales in his book "Il Milione", a book which did much to introduce Europeans to Central Asia and China. He first learned about China from his father and uncle. Together, they travelled through China where they met Kublai Khan. Returning after 24 years, they found Venice at war with Genoa. Marco Polo was arrested and only released in 1299. Later, he became a wealthy merchant. It can be discussed to which extent Polo's tales are true.
