Afghanistan's capital Kabul is located in the Kabul valley, some 1800 metres above sea level in the Hindu Kush mountain range. Kabul, like the rest of the country, has suffered many years of fighting, beginning with the Soviet invasion in 1979 all the way through to the fall of the Taliban in 2001. In the area around Kabul there are still many unexploded and unmarked land mines which groups such as the Danish Demining group are trying to clear. The city has around 3.5 million inhabitants.
