The Bering Strait is the strait that separates Russia from Alaska. The Bering Strait received its name from the Danish arctic explorer Vitus Jonassen Bering, who discovered the strait in 1728 on an expedition for the Russian Tsar. He wanted to find out whether Siberia and Asia and Alaska in North America were connected. The strait between the two continents was later named after him.
