The deepest point in the Pacific Ocean is the Mariana Trench, which is also the deepest point on Earth. It goes down 10,911 metres. There are around 25,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean. Its current name was given by explorer Ferdinand Magellan who in the 1500s described the ocean as 'beautiful and peaceful, hence the name 'Pacific Ocean' which means 'peaceful sea'.
