Tsingtao is one of the biggest breweries in China and is located in the metropolis Qingdao. It was founded in 1903 by German settlers as the 'Germania-Brauerei'. It was since sold to Japanese investors and after World War 2 was taken over by the Chinese Tsui family. In 1949, the company, like all others, was nationalised as part of the new, Communist China. For a long time the beer was brewed after the German 'Reinheitsgebot' from 1516, according to which the beer can only contain water, yeast, barley, and hops. Today, rice is also included.
