The ant queen lays eggs that develop into larvae and then pupae before they become adult ants. Whether the ant will be a queen or worker (sterile female) is determined by the food in the larval stage. The larvae is fed by a worker ant which regurgitates food. A new worker spends its first days by taking care of the queen and larvae. Then it is promoted to digging and other tasks. Eventually it procures the food and defends the nest. Sometimes the ant society creates swarms of new queens and males with wings. They fly away and start new communities. Males die shortly after mating.
