Bet your knowledge and answer Start the quizCorrect answer
22 months
Explanation
Elephants (Elephantidae) are a family within the mammal class (Mammalia). Today, there are several different elephant species in the world: the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), and the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis). The ancestors of modern elephants belonged to the genus Primelephas. Both mammoths and "true" elephants descend from this ancestor. The gestation period in elephants is 22 months—a record among mammals. A newborn elephant calf usually weighs around 105 kilograms; they live for 50–70 years and can reach a weight of up to 12 tons.
