The Swedish diretor Lasse Hallström came to Hollywood after directing a few films in his home country. He broke through internationally with the movie "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" from 1993 starring Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and Juliette Lewis, among others. He has since ventured into melodramas, and was very succesful with his movie "Chocolat" from 2000 starring Johnny Depp. He received his first Oscar nomination for his film "My Life as a Dog" (Mitt liv som hund, 1995) and his second nomination for "The Cider House Rules" (1999) with Michael Caine and Tobey Maguire.
