The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is unmanned and orbits Earth. It was carried into orbit by the Space Shuttle Discovery on 24 April 1990 and is a 2.4 metres long aperture telescope, weighing 11 tonnes. The Hubble Space Telescope has recorded many important images of planets, stars and galaxies and has made it possible to discover objects hitherto unknown. It is named after the astronomer Edwin Hubble. A few years from now, Hubble will be replaced by the James Webb Space Telescope.
