Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1910-1997) was a French naval officer, explorer, ecologist, and researcher. He studied the sea and all forms of life in water. With the ship Calypso, Cousteau visited the most interesting bodies of water in the world, including some rivers. These visits led to several film awards, including three Academy Awards. Cousteau was a fierce protector of the environment. One of his achievements was to hinder that atomic waste would not, as planned, be dumped in the sea.
