The volcano Cotopaxi is located around 75 kms south of Quito in Ecuador. Standing at 5897 metres, it is the highest point in the country. Cotopaxi is one of the world's highest active volcanies. Since 1738 it has erupted more than 50 times. The last major and damaging eruption took plcae in 1903. In 1942 and 1975, two smaller eruptions took place.
