Aborigines are the indigenous inhabitants of the Australian continent. They have lived there for over 40.000 years. The term was derived in the 1700s from the Latin 'ab origine', meaning "from the beginning". Thus the name means "the original inhabitants". Aboriginal people wandered from one area to another, when their current area was empty of food. They found the way through their songlines, which are stories told in songs about ponds, mountains and other natural phenomena. This made it possible for them to navigate through the wide open Australian country.
