Ivan Basso (born 1977) is an Italian cyclist. He is a climber and started as a professional with Riso Scotti in 1999. Basso won the white jersey in Tour de France 2002 and placed second in 2005. In the period 2004-2006, whilst riding for Team CSC, he was widely perceived to be the 'new Armstrong'. Basso was withdrawn from Tour de France in 2006 due to doping suspicions as part of OperaciĆ³n Puerto. After two years' quarantine, he returned in 2008, now for the team Liquigas. His nickname is 'Ivan the Terrible'.
