THE HUMAN QUESTION #1138

What is claustrophobia?

A fear of enclosed spaces

Explanation

Claustrophobia is the fear of having no escape and being closed in in small spaces or rooms. Those suffering panic when they get into situations where they feel locked in, like in lifts, trains or small rooms. Claustrophobia is often considered the opposite of agoraphobia or 'the fear of open spaces', but this is oversimplifying matters: claustrophobics can also be afraid of large groups of people, and agoraphobia can also be described as 'the fear of public spaces'. Thus, a festival can affect both claustrophobics and agoraphobics negatively.
