MOVIES QUESTION #5955

Luchino Visconti has directed an Italian, neorealist film from 1948 about fishermen on Sicily in the south of Italy. What is it called?

La terra trema (The Earth Trembles)

Explanation

Neorealism is the term used for the most famous period in Italian film history, stretching from the mid 1940s to the early 1950s. It saw a much more intense focus on the everyday working man, as illustrated e.g. in 'Ladi di Biciclette' by Vittorio De Sica and 'La Terra Trema' (The Earth Trembles) by Luchino Visconti. Both films are from 1948. It was Rosselini's film 'Roma, citta aperta' (Rome, Open City) from 1945 which started the trend of neorealism, which has since then provided inspiration for many other new waves worldwide.
