BIOLOGY QUESTION #11550

From which animal do we get silk?

Silkworm

Explanation

The silkmoth originates from Northeastern China. The moth lays eggs that turn into larvae also called caterpillar. When the caterpillar develops into a moth, it spins a cocoon (casing) that is made of a coherent thread. The thread is between 300 and 900 metres long. To get the silk thread, the cocoons are placed in boiling water, which kills the caterpillar. The hot water makes it easier to wind the silk thread free of the caterpillar. The cooked caterpillar is often eaten. Today, silkworms are bred all over the world.
