SCIENCE QUESTION #11570

What is the "Big Dipper"?

A constellation

Explanation

The night sky is divided into 88 regions called constellations. They are a practical tool for astronomers who want to tell roughly where in the sky an observation is made. Big Dipper is part of the constellation Ursa Major. It consists of Ursa Major's seven brightest stars. The Ursa Major's stars are easy to find in the sky, because they look like a wagon. They can therefore be used to locate other stars, for example the North Star, which is a big bright star in a straight line above the end of the Big Dipper.
