HISTORY QUESTION #8966

Sailor Sir Francis Drake sailed in 1563 towards the Spanish mainland colonies. What was one of the reasons why he hated the Spaniards?

They were Catholics

Explanation

English Sir Francis Drake (ca. 1540-1596) was both vice admiral, navigator, explorer, politician, engineer, ship enthusiast and a pirate on Elizabeth I of England's time. He was the second sailor, who carried out a circumnavigation of the world. The first to do this was the Spaniard Elcano in 1522. Drake sailed West in 1563 towards the Spanish mainland colonies, because he was attracted by the enormous wealth. It is said that he hated the Spaniards because of their Catholic faith and because they were suspicious of all who were not Spaniards. He started his world tour in 1577, and when he returned home, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth.
